On January 15, 2024, the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards premiered to honor the incredible work done in the television industry throughout the year. Hosted by Blackish Star Anthony Anderson, TV fans watched in eager anticipation to see who would walk home with the most amount of awards. With shows like The Bear and Succession sweeping in the television categories this award season, viewers at home were excited to see if there were going to be any new winners who came into play.
At 5:00 pm PST, the host took the stage. Throughout his opening monologue, he talks about his TV crushes, Travis Barker, and ends it by talking about how everyone ignores the play-off music, so his mom will be the one to cut off those who seem to go overtime.
At 5:07 pm Anderson welcomes the first presenter of the night, Christina Applegate who is handing out the award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The Emmy went to Ayo Edebiri for her work on The Bear.
After Applegate, Carol Burnett is welcomed to the stage to present the next award. The Award for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series went to Quinta Brunson for Abbot Elementary. Upon her acceptance, she gives a warm, heartfelt, and emotional speech.
After a short commercial break, at 5:19 Anderson welcomed viewers back by paying tribute to The Sopranos, and then welcomed stars of said series Michael Imperioli and Lorraine Bracco to present Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The award went to Jennifer Coolidge for White Lotus. In her speech, she thanked the “evil gays”.
After that, Pedro Pascal took the stage to present the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In his time on the stage, he finally addressed why his arm is in a sling, stating that “Kieran Culkin beat the sh*t out of me”, a gag met with plenty of laughter. The Emmy then went to Matthew Macfayen for Succession.
At 5:32 pm PST, Jon Cryer and Holland Taylor presented the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. This went to Ebon Moss-Bachrach for his work on The Bear. Martin Lawernce, Tisha Cambell, Tichina Arnold, and Karl Payne starred in the 90’s sitcom Martin. They reunited on stage to present the award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series which went to The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White creating a clean sweep for The Bear in the comedy category.
At 5:43 pm PST new After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson took the stage along with Stephen Colbert to present the award for Best Variety Sketch Show. The award went to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
After this, Marla Gibbs takes the stage with five-time Emmy nominee Marla Gibbs who presented Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie. Niecy Nash-Betts took the award home for Monster: Dahmer – The Jeffery Dahmer Story.
At 5:55 pm, the cast of Cheers reunited on stage. Actors Ted Danson, Rhea Pearlman, George Wendt, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger presented the award for Best Directing in a Comedy Series. The Bear took it home for its fifth win of the night as Christopher Storer won. He also won for Best Writing in a Comedy Series.
At 6:02 pm, stars of the hit comedy Community Joe McHale and Ken Jeong presented the award for Best Reality Competition which went to RuPaul’s Drag Race. This award has made history as RuPaul now has the most Emmy wins for a host and the most Emmy wins for a person of color.
Arsenio Hall then took the stage to present the award for Best Writing For a Variety Series which went to John Oliver for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia then presented the award for Best Talk Series, which went to The Daily Show for Trevor Noah.
At 6:19 pm Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple and Brett Goldstein present the award for Directing for a Limited Anthology Series or TV Movie. Beef’s Lee Sung Jin takes home the Emmy.
Grey’s Anatomy cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigl, and James Pickens Jr. took the stage to present Best Supporting Actor in a Limited, Anthology Series or TV Movie. Which then went to Paul Walter Hauser for Black Bird.
At 6:32 pm Mad Men’s Jon Hamm presents the award for Best Writing for a Drama Series. The award went to Jesse Armstrong for Succession. After that, Marvel’s Loki stars Tom Hiddleston and Key Huy Quan presented the award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited, Anthology Series or TV Movie. The Emmy went to Beef’s Lee Sung Jin.
At 6:43 Jason Bateman took the stage to present the award for Best Directing for a Drama Series which went to Mark Mylod for Succession. This makes three wins tonight for Succession.
SNL alum Tina Fey and Amy Poehler presented the award for Best Variety Special (Live) which went to Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodgers Stadium. This is also a historical award as Elton John is now an EGOT winner.
The award for Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology, or TV Movie was presented by American Horror Story’s Dylan McDermott. The Emmy went to Steven Yuen for Beef. Jenna Ortega and Sherly Lee Ralph then presented the award for Best Lead Actress in the same category which went to Ali Wong for her work on Beef.
Dynasty’s Dame Joan Collins and Empire’s Taraji P. Henson presented the award for Outstanding Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie which, to no surprise, went to Beef.
At 7:14 pm PST, Emmy President Frank Scherma introduced a montage of 75 iconic moments captured on television. After the montage, Anderson introduced Euphoria‘s Colman Domingo and Ted Lasso‘s Hannah Waddingham who presented the 2023 Governor’s Award to GLAAD. The award was presented to Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD.
Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers, stars of the series All in the Family presented the In Memoriam segment with Charlie Puth and The War & Treaty singing “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa. Which transitioned to the Friends theme song, ending with Matthew Perry.
At 7:35 pm, Calista Flockhart presented the award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The award went to Kieran Culkin for Succession. Jodie Foster then presented the award for Best Lead Actress in the same category which went to Sarah Snook for Succession.
At 7:49 the final awards of the night were given out. Natasha Lyonne presented the award for Outstanding Comedy Series which went to The Bear. Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage presented for Outstanding Drama Series. The Emmy Went to Succession.
At the night’s end, The Bear came out on top with a whopping 11 awards won. Until next year!
