The 75th Emmy Awards are officially upon us as the nominees have officially been announced. According to CNN, HBO’s Succession, created by Jesse David Armstrong (Peep Show, Fresh Meat) takes the lead with a total of 27 nominations. With 24 nominations, HBO’s The Last Of Us, created by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, Borderlands), has the second most nominations.
As Deadline notes, Succession made Emmy Awards history as three actors from the same show have been nominated for one category. Actors Brian Cox (Troy, The Independent), Jeremy Strong (The Trial of the Chicago 7, Armageddon Time), and Kiernan Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Home Alone) have all been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Both Succession and The Last of Us will also go up against other HBO series including House of the Dragon, created by author George R. R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter) and Ryan Condal (Colony, Rampage), The White Lotus, created by Mike White (School of Rock, The Year of the Dog), and Barry, created by Alec Berg (Eurotrip, The Dictator).
The Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max named Casey Bloys released a statement to Warner Bros. Discovery. She stated, “We are incredibly proud of our record-breaking HBO/Max Emmy nominees this year and are especially honored to send ‘Succession’ off having made Emmy history. We feel privileged to be the home of such remarkable talent, whose dedication to telling captivating and thought-provoking stories is second to none. It is a testament to their unparalleled abilities that our programming has resonated with audiences in such a profound way.”
Other series that racked up multiple nominations includes Showtime’s Yellowjackets, created by Ashley Lyle (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico) and Bart Nickerson (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico) for the categories of Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Additionally, series such Hulu’s Abbott Elementary, created by Quinta Brunson (Cars on the Road, Miracle Workers), Hulu’s The Bear, created by Christopher Storer (Ramy, Eighth Grade), and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, created by Jason Sudeikis (We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses) have been nominated for multiple categories including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series.
The 2023 Emmy Awards is set to air on September 18th on Fox at 7:00 p.m. CDT. However, as Deadline notes, this year’s ceremony may be delayed depending on if actors decide to partake in the possible SAG-AFTRA strike.
