Primetime Emmys 2021 Recap

The 2021 Emmys ceremony, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer (The Neighborhood), kicked off Sunday. Disney+’s The Mandalorian and Netflix’s The Crown nabbed the most nominations per program with 24 total nominations each.

The Crown won a full sweep of awards, including an award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon), Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for Benjamin Carron (The Heist), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Tobias Menzies (Outlander), and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Olivia Colman (The Favourite). Within the first portion of the ceremony, HBO’s Mare of Easttown already won two Emmys, one for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series to Julianne Nicholson (Togo), and another for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series to Evan Peters (American Horror Story).

The cast of Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek made a surprise appearance about halfway through the ceremony to reveal the winner of the category, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Paul W. Downs (Rough Night), Jen Statsky (The Good Place), and Lucia Aniello (Rough Night), for their work on HBO Max’s Hacks. Meanwhile, making history, RuPaul’s Drag Race took the Best Competition Series Emmy, making RuPaul the most-awarded Black artist at the awards ceremony with his 11th win.

Following RuPaul’s victory, Debbie Allen (Grey’s Anatomy) was honored with the Governors Award for her achievements in film. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her colleagues and friends, such as Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy), Barry Gordy (The Last Dragon), and the late Kobe Bryant. “I am trembling with gratitude and grace,” Allen said. “Let this moment resonate with women across the world…It is time for you to claim your power.”

Alongside shows like Disney+’s WandaVision, Netflix’s The Crown, and Disney+’s The Mandalorian, Apple TV+’s feel-good show, Ted Lasso, was a favorite to take on its Emmy nominations this year. The first Emmy for Ted Lasso was awarded to Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones) for the category of Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, while Brett Goldstein (SuperBob) later won an Emmy for the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and star Jason Sudeikis (We’re The Millers) for the category, Outstanding Comedy Actor.
