The most wonderful time of the year for TV enthusiasts has arrived. This morning the Television Academy announced its nominations for the 2021 Emmy Awards. Presented by the father-daughter acting duo of Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us, Truth Be Told) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (#RAYSHAWN, Blindspotting), the nominations announced included Outstanding Drama, Comedy, Limited, and Competition Series along with Outstanding Actor and Actress for the three scripted categories.
According to Consequence.net, HBO and HBO Max led all networks with whopping 130 total nominations. Their litany of potential winners includes double-nominee Jean Smart (Hacks, Mare of Easttown), a whopping 18 nominations for the now-canceled genre-bending series, Lovecraft Country, and nominations for I May Destroy You, The Undoing, In Treatment, and HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant.
Following HBO is Netflix with 129 nominations, according to Consequence.net. They can attribute the majority of those spots to the British period series, The Crown, which tied with Disney+’s The Mandalorian to lead all series with 24 nominations. The Crown is also up for Outstanding Drama Series and acting nominations for leads Olivia Coleman (The Father, Fleabag), Emma Corrin (My Policeman, Pennyworth), and Josh O’Connor (Hope Gap, God’s Own Country). Gillian Anderson (The Fall, Sex Education) is again nominated in the supporting actress category along with Promising Young Woman scribe, Emerald Fennell.
Netflix also has The Queen’s Gambit battling for limited series supremacy in addition to acting noms for Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants, Last Night in Soho) and Moses Ingram (Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Tragedy Of Macbeth) for Outstanding Lead Actress and Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, respectively. Another period series has high hopes of winning as the romance drama, Bridgerton, scored lead acting nominations for Phoebe Dynevor (Younger, Snatch) and Rege-Jean Page (Roots, Sylvie’s Love) as well as an Outstanding Drama Series nomination.
In a distant third place, Disney+ shakes up the playing field with 71 nominations via Consequence.net. Along with The Mandalorian up for Outstanding Drama Series, it’s joined by Marvel’s WandaVision. The Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Paul Bettany (Uncle Frank, Legion) vehicle spurred noms for both leads along with Kathryn Hahn (Mrs. Fletcher, Knives Out 2) for her supporting role as the witch, Agatha Harkness. The series is also up for Outstanding Limited Series.
On the comedy side of things, Apple TV+’s feel-good series, Ted Lasso, scored 20 nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series and six supporting acting nominations across both fields. It was beaten by NBC’s Saturday Night Live which coveted 21 nominations including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. Its only competition, in a history-making showing, is HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show.
This year’s nominees also boasted a diverse field and many firsts. Consequence.net reports Mj Rodriguez scoring the first lead acting nomination for trans person for her role as Blanca Evangelista on FX’s, Pose. And Saturday Night Live scored newcomer Bowen Yang ( a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Yang became the first Chinese American actor to covet an Emmy nomination via Deadline. He also becomes the first featured star of the decades-long comedy series to be nominated for an award.
