Disney+ is continuing to expand their content and it has been announced that there will be more Asian content on the streaming server for this next half of the year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, viewers can be most excited to look forward to the BTS documentary about the K-pop megastars, Korean crime dramas, and even popular Japanese animes such as Phoenix: Eden17 and Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku Arc.
The streamer is getting ready to release its largest amount of new originals ever to grow more in the Asia-Pacific region markets. The expected releases include up to 20 new series and movies mostly from Korea and Japan. Disney’s attention towards expanding their markets shows the growing popularity of Korean dramas and Japanese anime worldwide.
Korean dramas such as Dr. Romantic ranked first in most of APAC markets during it’s first month of release and Japanese thriller Gannibal and the anime Tokyo Revengers were within the top five most titles in Japan during the week of their release.
In a statement by Disney’s executive VP original content strategy in APAC Carol Choi, “With the success of our initial wave of APAC originals, we will continue to build on this momentum by delivering exceptional storytelling through the second half of 2023 and beyond. Thrillers, crime-action and fantasy, centered on strong storylines from Korea and Japan, are resonating with audiences, and we look forward to continued collaboration with leading content creators and storytellers from this region.”
Korean content that are scheduled to release on Disney+ include Moving, BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star, In the Soop: Friendcation, and Soundtrack #2. On Japan’s side, viewers can look forward to the live-action anime hybrid series Dragons of Wonderhatch and the popular anime series Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku Arc, which was a part of the collaboration between Disney and Japanese publishing house Kodansha. There will also be a special ice-show performance of Japanese Olympic ice-skater Yuzuru Hanyu and much more.
