Per Deadline, Netflix has offered the first look at their upcoming crime drama series, Adolescence. Due on the streamer next year, the four-part series, created by Stephen Graham, is notable for each episode being shot in one continuous take as the action unfolds in real time.
The series will mark a first role for newcomer Owen Cooper, who plays a 13-year-old teenage boy who is arrested for the murder of a girl at his school. Graham (A Thousand Blows, Boiling Point) plays his father and ‘appropriate’ adult, while Ashley Walters (Top Boy, I Am…) plays a detective inspector and Erin Doherty (Chloe, Call the Midwife) a clinical psychologist assigned to the case.
Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones, Ten Pound Poms), Christine Tremarco (Emmerdale Farm, The Responder), Mark Stanley (Trigger Point, The Reckoning), Jo Hartley (After Life, Das Boot) and newcomer Amélie Pease also star. The series is produced by Warp Films, Matriarch Productions and Plan B for Netflix.
Graham executive produces alongside Philip Barantini, with whom he worked on Boiling Point, the BAFTA-nominated feature that was adapted as a BBC series and also employed the continuous shot trick.
Graham wrote and created Adolescence alongside Jack Thorne (Best Interests, His Dark Materials), who previously wrote the Graham-starring dramas Help and The Virtues, and was co-writer on several This is England series and films. Mark Herbert (Space’s Deepest Secrets, Butterfly Collectors) and Emily Feller (Devils, Leonardo) are executive producers for Warp Films, Graham and Hannah Walters (Malpractice, PRU) for Matriarch Productions, Thorne for One Shoe Films, Barantini for It’s All Made Up Productions, and Brad Pitt (High School, Paper Girls), Jeremy Kleiner (Feud, Wayne Shorter: Zero Gravity), Dede Gardner (Outer Range, 3 Body Problem) and Nina Wolarsky (The OA, The Crown) for Plan B Entertainment. Plan B’s Carina Sposato (Raised by Wolves, The Hot Zone), Peter Balm (Little Birds, The Virtues) and Warp’s Niall Shamma (The Last Panthers, The Midnight Beast) are co-executive producers. The producer is Jo Johnson (Casualty, Coronation Street).
