In a strategic awards-season move, Disney+ has placed Agatha All Along, Marvel’s popular spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms, WandaVision), in the comedy category. According to an exclusive from Variety, this positioning means the series will compete for top comedy awards at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and next year’s Emmys. This submission puts Agatha alongside acclaimed series like ABC’s Abbott Elementary, FX’s The Bear and HBO’s Hacks.
By entering Agatha All Along as a comedy, Disney+ is setting up Hahn for a Best Actress race against notable talents like Jean Smart (Hacks), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear)—each a recent winner in the comedy acting categories. This is a key opportunity for Hahn, who has yet to receive a Golden Globe nomination, especially with an eye on next year’s Emmys. Initially planned as a single-season story, the comedy category choice hints that Marvel may be contemplating more seasons for Agatha Harkness. The Television Academy’s limited series rules require a self-contained narrative without recurring main characters, so positioning Agatha as a comedy could suggest that Marvel envisions the show as an ongoing series.
This decision reshapes the limited series award landscape. With Agatha competing in comedy, shows like Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Ripley might face less competition in the limited series races. With the Emmy eligibility window open until May 31, Agatha has ample time to make a mark in the awards circuit, with the potential to compete in categories like the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America.
Created and helmed by Jac Schaeffer, Agatha All Along continues the story of WandaVision, where Hahn’s Agatha Harkness lost her powers in a climactic face-off with Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen (Love & Death, Sorry for Your Loss). This series follows Agatha as she attempts to regain her powers alongside a strong ensemble cast that includes Joe Locke (Heartstopper), Debra Jo Rupp (That ’70s Show), Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus, Parks and Recreation), Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live, Home Economics), Ali Ahn (The Diplomat, Billions), Okwui Okpokwasili (The Blacklist), Patti LuPone (American Horror Story), Evan Peters (Monster), Maria Dizzia (Before) and Paul Adelstein (Prison Break). Disney and Marvel have yet to confirm a renewal, but expanding Agatha into a multi-season series would likely require a formal announcement, similar to FX’s Shogun.
Marvel has previously encountered challenges in award categorization. The Television Academy declined WandaVision’s limited series submission due to returning characters. However, Marvel shows like Echo and The Book of Boba Fett, spun off from The Mandalorian, were accepted as miniseries despite character crossover.
Following WandaVision’s success and its 23 Emmy nominations, including a Supporting Actress nomination for Hahn, Agatha All Along has captivated viewers, racking up 9.3 million views in its debut week. Variety’s TV critic Alison Herman ( called the show a “captivating spell,” praising Hahn’s “scene-stealing” performance and Agatha’s humor and charisma as a refreshingly complex protagonist.
“With its clever humor, impressive cast and Hahn’s dynamic portrayal of Agatha, xxxcc Along appears well-positioned for awards season success—and, potentially, future seasons that will continue to delight fans
