Per Deadline, Netflix has released production images and announced the premiere date for its upcoming six-episode limited series, American Primeval. Directed by Pete Berg (Friday Night Lights, God Save Texas) and written by Mark L. Smith (Twisters, The Revenant), the project will launch on January 9, 2025.
The series, set in 1857, will be a dark and gritty retelling of the birth of the American West, featuring characters willing to fight and die to keep or control land. The production images reveal Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy, Bad Blood) as Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon Church and a man who will do whatever it takes to secure the survival of his persecuted followers—including enlisting his Mormon army, the Nauvoo Legion.
The images also reveal Lucas Neff (Monsters at Work, The Handmaid’s Tale) as Captain Dillinger, a disillusioned American captain responsible for keeping the peace in a very lawless land. Once an idealistic West Point cadet, Dillinger has become tired and cynical as he struggles to put a stop to the violence that surrounds him.
The series cast includes Taylor Kitsch (Painkiller, Waco: The Aftermath), Betty Gilpin (Mrs. Davis, Skull Island), Dane DeHaan (The Stranger, The Staircase), Shea Whigham (The Righteous Gemstones, Perry Mason), Saura Lightfoot-Leon (Life After Life, Masters of the Air), and Derek Hinkey (Django, Walker: Independence).
Berg and Smith will serve as executive producers alongside Eric Newman (Cowboy Cartel, Griselda) and Alex Gayner (A Murder at the End of the World, Too Old to Die Young). Julie O’Keefe (Killers of the Flower Moon) will be Indigenous Cultural Consultant and Project Advisor.
