Prime Video has given the green light for a spinoff of its hit series Reacher, Deadline reports. The spinoff series will have Maria Sten (Swamp Thing, Channel Zero) as the main lead, focusing on her character, Frances Neagley. Jennifer Salke (This Is Us, Modern Family), head of Amazon MGM Studios, announced the news with a new press release at the “Prime Video Presents: Trailblazers” event in London on Sunday night.
According to Deadline, the series was created by Reacher‘s showrunner and executive producer Nick Santora (FUBAR, Scorpion), based on Lee Child’s (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Killing Floor) books, and Nicholas Wootton (Law & Order, The Endgame). They will executive produce and co-show run the spinoff, as they previously worked together on Prison Break. The show will be produced by Skydance Television, Amazon MGM Studios and CBS Studios. Alan Ritchson (Titans, Smallville), star of Reacher, is expected to appear as a guest star in the new spinoff, but Prime Video has not confirmed anything as of yet.
“As Reacher continues to resonate with our global customers in a profound way, expanding on the storytelling and characters with a spinoff was an easy decision,” Vernon Sanders (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jack Ryan), head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, explained via the press release. “With Nick and Nicholas as well as our partners Skydance and CBS Studios, we’re confident this new chapter, starring the amazing Sten, will not only honor the Reacher legacy but also bring fresh energy and excitement to new and longtime fans alike.”
According to Deadline, the series also has Don Granger (The Tomorrow War, Annihilation), Lisa Kussner (Clown, Silent Hill) and Child as executive producers. Furthermore, Dana Goldberg (I Am Legend, Star Trek Beyond), Matt Thunell (Apocalypto, RED) and David Ellison (Terminator Zero, Top Gun: Maverick) are executive producers under SkyDance Television. People who will oversee the project under SkyDance are also Kenny Madrid (Drone, Bon Appetit), Carolyn Harris (Just Friends, Tideland) and Niko Fernandez.
“Child created an immensely rich character with Neagley, and Sten brought her to life in such a vivid, authentic way in Reacher,” Santora and Wootton said via the press release. “Amazon, Skydance Television, and CBS Studios have been tremendous partners from the start, and we are excited to explore Neagley’s story further and dive into what makes her so unique.”
According to the press release, the series’ official logline states, “Frances Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago. When she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell bent on justice. Using everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.”
“I’m beyond thrilled to further explore the world of Neagley and her somewhat mysterious background,” Sten said via Deadline. “She’s such a wonderful character to play and I’m very excited for everyone to get to know her a little better.”
According to Deadline, the second season of Reacher became the first title to hit the number-one spot worldwide when it first premiered on Prime Video.
The first two seasons of Reacher are available to stream on Prime Video, and the third season is now in production. As confirmed by the streamer, the spinoff has no official release or production date yet.
