Joe Russo (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War), the filmmaking duo named The Russo Brothers, have confirmed that they are still involved in the production of the second season of Prime Video’s Citadel, despite the alleged news of them returning to Marvel to direct Avengers 5 and 6 was announced, Comicbook.com reports. Citadel: Diana will be the second installment in the Citadel franchise, and the two brothers are executive producers for the show. Because of this, Amazon has decided to reassure fans of the show with a statement from Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke (Close Up with the Hollywood Reporter) and head of TV Vernon Sanders (The Enemy Within, Harry’s Law) in an interview with Variety.
“They’re definitely involved in the second season, and directing and producing, and we are moving ahead and excited about that,” Salke explained via Comicbook.com. “So that’s in the works. And Italy’s Citadel: Diana, I think it really just delivers in so many ways. It’s a really cool character. It’s very thrilling, obviously, in the spy genre, but it’s really grounded and really well-execute, and kind of edge of your seat. And the star of it is absolutely great. And then we also have a show called Honey Bunny that’s coming out of India. Our biggest producers, most successful Amazon creators, Raj Nidimoru (The Family Man, Farzi) and Krishna D.K. (Stree, Guns & Gulaabs) [Raj & DK], are presenting this show that’s a bit of a prequel that sort of further takes you into the world of Citadel.”
“The Diana piece coming from Italy, Honey Bunny coming from India, each of them has some flavor that’s very specific to the region, but there is still global storytelling,” Sanders added via Comicbook.com. “And there’ll be news in the not too distant future about Season two of Citadel, the mothership, which is about to go into production soon, and the cast that’s coming to that franchise we’re very excited about.”
According to Comicbook.com, Citadel: Diana is set in Milan in the 2030s, as it picks up eight years after the events that unfolded in the first installment of the Citadel franchise. After the agency’s fall, Diana Cavalieri, an undercover agent from Citadel, is now trapped by enemies and has the role of a mole in Manticore. When the agent understands there is a way out of this situation and the possibility of running away, she allies with her enemy, Edo Zani, played by Lorenzo Cervasio (Il Grande Gioco, Io Ricordo Piazza Fontana), who is the son of the head of the Italian organization, and the heir of Manticore Italy. The head of the organization is Ettore Zani, played by Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley, Tigers), whose ambition and goal in life is that his organization would lead the other European families’ organizations.
Citadel: Diana’s second season will exclusively premiere worldwide on Prime Video on October 10.
