After January’s Emmy ceremony awarded series airing in the 2022-2023 season, the 2024 Emmy nominations were announced today. For contenders to be eligible, they would have had to air between June 1, 2023, through May 31, 2024. The Hollywood Reporter details FX Network’s Shōgun and comedy series The Bear lead with the most nominations. View a listing of the major nominees at the end of this article.
The nominations were livestreamed on the Emmy website and YouTube channel, with Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale doing the honors with Television Academy chair, Chris Abrego. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shōgun scored 25 nominations as the second non-English language series nominated for Best Drama. The Bear followed with a record-breaking 23 nominations, the most for a comedy series in a year. The leading top five was rounded out with Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building with 21, HBO’s anthology crime series, True Detective, with 19, and Netflix’s final season of The Crown, earning 18 nominations.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix topped all other networks and platforms with 107 nominations. In a first, FX scored the second-place spot above HBO (and Max), with 93 to the latter’s 91. Apple TV followed with 70 nominations, nearly 40 more than the next contender, ABC, bookending the top five with 38. Hulu and Disney+ bring up the rear with 26 and 19 nominations, respectively.
With it leading the drama pack, Shōgun earned acting nominations for its leads Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada. They portrayed Toda Mariko and Lord Yoshii Toranaga, respectively. Joining them are supporting actor nominees Takehrio Hira, for his portrayal of Lord Ishido, and Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige. Néstor Carbonell earned a Guest Actor nomination for his role as Vasco Rodrigues.
Other top drama contenders include Prime Video’s Fallout and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Apple TV’s Slow Horses and The Morning Show, Netflix’s The Crown and 3 Body Problem, and HBO’s The Gilded Age. Sanada shares the lead actor space with Donald Glover, Walton Goggins, Gary Oldman, Dominic West, and Hijack’s Idris Elba. Frontrunner Sawai will contend with Carrie Coon, Maya Erskine, Jennifer Aniston, Imelda Staunton, and Reese Witherspoon.
On the comedy side, The Bear dominates, spreading the love for its second season. Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri are up for outstanding lead actor and actress, while Ebon-Moss Bachrach and Lionel Boyce earned supporting actor nominations. Liza Colón-Zayas earns her first series nomination for her portrayal of Tina. White contends with Only Murders’ two Martins, Larry David in the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Matt Berry for What We Do In the Shadows, and Reservation Dogs’ D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, his first Emmy nomination. Edebiri is joined by Abbott’s Quinta Brunson, Loot’s Maya Rudolph, Hacks Jean Smart, Kristen Wiig for Palm Royale, and Selena Gomez for Only Murders.
