Warner Bros. Discovery reports that the second season of House of the Dragon, which was released last Sunday, has received only 7.8M viewers in the U.S., according to Deadline.
The number reflects a low turnout for the franchise since the show’s first season, which was released last year, and hit 10M views on its debut night, according to Deadline.
The streaming company shared that Max had its best day ever streaming-wise on Sunday. According to Deadline, this happened because of the release of the second season of House of the Dragon.
Furthermore, data from Samba TV shared that there was a viewership drop for the second season of House of the Dragon instead of when the first season premiered. The results show that 1.3M U.S. households saw the second season premiere on HBO or Max, according to Deadline. Instead, season one grasped a total number of 2.6M views when it premiered.
According to Deadline, it seemed like the audience was able to catch up on season one’s last episode. A week before season two premiered, the first season collected 1M views; this marked the biggest audience engagement in the previous year and a half. This could indicate the possibility that season two will get greater viewership results in the next few weeks, so audiences will catch up on the series and rewatch it.
According to Deadline, the series was more successful worldwide than in its home country. Season two has broken various streaming viewing records, and streamers saw a 30% viewing growth compared to when season one premiered. According to WBD, it’s the biggest launch ever for Max in that specific region.
House of the Dragon was created by Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules, Rampage), George R.R. Martin (The Sandkings, Beauty and the Beast, Doorways) and Miguel Sapochnik (Game Of Thrones, Repo Men, Finch). They also are executive producers and co-showrunners of the show. Furthermore, other EPs are Jocelyn Diaz (Lost, Ugly Betty, Boardwalk Empire), Sara Hess (Orange Is the New Black, House), Ron Schmidt (Mare of Easttown, Watchmen) and Vince Gerardis (Game Of Thrones, Jumper). According to Deadline, the show it’s based from Martin’s book Fire & Blood.
The second season of House of the Dragon is now available to stream on Max.
