The wait is finally over; Apple TV+ released an update on the premiere date of Pachinko season two. According to TVLine, season two will debut Friday, August 23rd, with eight episodes and will release new episodes weekly through October 11th.
The Pachinko series, based on Min Jin Lee’s (Free Food For Millionaires, Han: roman) New York Times bestselling novel of the same name, follows “the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in a quest to survive and thrive. Starting in South Korea in the early 1900s, the story has been told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja, who triumphs against all odds,” TVLine reports. The second season will continue to weave Sunja’s family story through Korean, Japanese and English dialogue, a method integral in communicating the complicated intricacies of their history, conflicts, and relationships.
While information regarding Pachinko season two has been limited, a previous mxdwn article revealed the season is rumored to “highlight the third generation of characters, while still focusing on the stories of the last season’s protagonists.”
Returning actors for season two are Minha Kim (Main Street, Investigation Partners) in the role of Teenage Sunja, Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari, The Housemaid) as Older Sunja, Lee Min-ho (Boys Over Flowers, Heirs) as Hansu, Jin Ha (Civil War, Devs) as Solomon, Anna Sawai (Shōgun, F9: The Fast Saga) as Naomi, Soji Arai (Tokyo Vice, The Depths) as Mozasu, Jung Eun-chae (Return, Nobody’s Daughter Haewon) as Young Kyunghee and Han Joon-woo (Happiness, Into the Ring) as Yoseb, via TVLine. The press release continues that Kim Sungkyu (Kingdom, The Outlaws) will join the cast as Kim Changho.
Since its premiere, Pachinko has garnered several accolades. TVLine recalls that season one received an Emmy nomination for Main Title Design, a Critics Choice Award, a Peabody Award, a Gotham Independent Film Award and an American Film Institute Award, to name a few.
Showrunner Soo Hugh (The Whispers, The Killing) said in a past mxdwn article, “Words cannot express my joy in being able to continue telling the extraordinary story of this indomitable family. I’m grateful to the amazing team at Apple and Media Res studio for believing and supporting this show and to our passionate fans who have cheered us on. It’s an honor to be able to continue working with this amazing cast and crew.” Hugh will continue as showrunner for season two and executive produce, along with Theresa Kang (The White Darkness, Dark Places), Lindsey Springer (The Morning Show, I’m a Virgo) and Michael Ellenberg (Prometheus, Robin Hood), TVLine confirms.
