The new iteration and fourth season of HBO’s True Detective saw a strong debut last night, according to Deadline. Sunday’s premiere of True Detective: Night Country received a whopping 2 million views on linear telecasts and Max alike, as per Warner Bros. Discovery and reported by Deadline. This is True Detective’s newest season in five years.
Given that True Detective: Night Country was released after Max was established, comparing the success of last night’s premiere to season three would not be as accurate. To better compare this success, another Max series, The White Lotus, saw 1.5 million cross-platform views for its season two premiere, as per Deadline. Likewise, other series, such as Euphoria, received 2.4 million views during its season two premiere. Lastly, Succession received an impressive 2.3 million views for its debut episode.
Deadline also notes that it’s not abnormal for some HBO series to ramp up more views as the season goes on. According to HBO, Euphoria and The White Lotus episode views skyrocketed to 19.5 million and 15.5 million for each episode, respectively. Succession also garnered similar numbers during its last season.
Also, per Deadline, HBO said that the series became the streamer’s top title just a week before the premiere of season two.
The official logline for True Detective: Night Country via Deadline reads: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers [played by] Jodie Foster (The Addams Family, Gunsmoke) and Evangeline Navarro [played by] Kali Reis (Catch the Fair One, Black Files) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
True Detective: Night Country also stars Fiona Shaw (The Avengers, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Finn Bennett (Hope Gap, The Nevers), Isabella Star LaBlanc (Long Slow Exhale, Pet Semetary: Bloodlines), John Hawkes (The Sessions, Winter’s Bone) and Christopher Eccleston (Shallow Grave, Thor: The Dark World). There will also be several guest stars this season, such as Aka Niviâna (Borgen), June Thiele (Molly of Denali, Atoms of Ashes), Anna Lambe (The Grizzlies, Trickster), Joel D. Montgrand (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Beans) and Diane Benson (White Fang, Alaska Daily).
To catch the new iteration and season four of True Detective: Night Country, a new episode will drop every Sunday on HBO or Max at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
