The Game of Thrones franchise, created by Warner Brothers, has more projects in store for fans, Comicbook reports. The main series concluded four years ago, but new spinoffs are in development for 2024. Firstly, there is the live-action named House of the Dragon, which has recently wrapped up its production on the long-awaited season two. Furthermore, the short stories project named Tales of Dunk and Egg received a green light from HBO to continue its production earlier this year.
George R.R. Martin (Wild Cards, Elden Ring), the author of the Game of Thrones books, has announced on his blog on Sunday that new projects are on the way.
“As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them,” Martin wrote, via Comicbook. “When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talents attached. Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved.”
Martin also added that one of their projects, Nine Voyages, was changed from live-action to animation because of the production costs that a live-action series has to unveil to be able to get released.
“Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however…and meanwhile, we have moved NINE VOYAGES, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation,” the author stated, via Comicbook. “A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”
Martin has confirmed that none of these animated projects have been greenlit by any network yet, meaning that these shows could never see the light of day. With that being said, Game of Thrones still holds the title of being one of Warner’s largest properties, so these series might likely be produced sometime in the future.
Game of Thrones’ eight complete seasons, including the first season of House of the Dragon, are now available to stream on Max. The second season of House of the Dragon is shown to be released on the same platform in the summer of 2024.
