According to Deadline, James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad) has confirmed that The Batman Universe by Matt Reeves is in the process of expanding. Along with this, DC is planning to develop a new series set in an all-new DC Universe. The news was confirmed by Gunn, who is the co-head of DC Studios, in response to fan questions.
Deadline reported that the questions were asked and answered via social media. Gunn was able to confirm that Reeves is in the process of producing an Arkham series which will be set in the Batman Universe and take place in the new world that is being created by Peter Safran (Annabelle: Creation, Superman: Legacy) and Gunn. Fans were also curious to understand if Reeves would be working on any other projects in the Batman Universe, also known as the “batverse”. Other projects include The Batman: Part II, the Penguin series, and the Arkham series.
Gunn responded to the fans enthusiastically while also shutting down the rumors, says Deadline. He stated, “Right now Matt is producing Arkham as a DCU series, so there’s just the two for now.” Gunn added to this by clarifying that Reeves will continue working on these projects, including the newest project by Gunn and Safran, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. “We love Matt as a director and producer so he’ll be producing stories both within his The Batman universe and within the DCU,” he said.
Deadline also claimed that Gunn stated that the Arkham series was always meant to take place in the DC Universe as opposed to the alternative universe known as “Elseworlds”. This is the universe where Reeves has his film The Batman as well as Todd Phillips’ sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. Gun stated, “It was one of the first pitches we bought when Peter and I came on board. I don’t know the permutations it went through before that time.”
