The first season of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty debuted in March of 2022. Created by Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla) and Jim Hecht (Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown), the series was quickly renewed for a second season. Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty is based on a biography by sportswriter Jeff Pearlman (The Last Folk Hero, Three Ring Circus). The biography is titled Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s and focuses on the NBA team’s Showtime era.
The second season of the series focuses on 1980, specifically right after the NBA finals, through 1984. The trailer can be viewed below.
As Deadline notes, season two will contain the first rematch between the two infamous basketball players Magic Johnson, played by Quincy Isaiah (Beneath the Grass, Corporate Coffee), and Larry Joe Bird, played by Sean Patrick Small (The Just, Utensils). Larry Bird is a part of the NBA team called the Boston Celtics.
Other stars of the series include John C. Reilly (Step Brothers, Sing) as Jerry Buss, Hadley Robinson (Moxie, Appendage) as Jeanie Buss, Adrien Brody (The Pianist, King Kong) as Pat Riley, Jason Segel (Shrinking, How I Met Your Mother) as Paul Westheard, Jason Clarke (Brotherhood, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Jerry West, first-time actor Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and more.
In addition to Borenstein and Hecht, the executive producers of the show are Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up, Vice), Kevin Messick (The Answer Man, Ibiza), Scott Stephens (True Detective, Deadwood), Rodney Barnes (Torment, Bliss), Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Eureka, I Am Legend), and Jason Shuman (Darkness Falls, Lone Survivor).
