Disney Plus’s original series, Star Wars Visions, Season 2 Episode 8, “The Pit,” explores the story of Imperial slaves forced to mine kyber crystals used to build a futuristic Imperial city for the Galactic Empire, resulting in making The Pit. The Pit trapped the Imperial slaves as they worked and required the stormtroopers’ help to reach the surface with transport ships. When there were no more kyber crystals to mine, the stormtroopers left the Imperial slaves to die in The Pit. The Imperial slave Crux (Daveed Diggs), a friend of the young Imperial slave kid Livy (Jordyn Curet), climbed out of The Pit and convinced the city’s inhabitants to save the slaves. However, the stormtroopers killed Crux by throwing him back into The Pit. Nevertheless, the city’s inhabitants helped save the Imperial slaves in The Pit via transport ships. When the Imperial slaves take off in their transport ships, Livy turns the kyber crystal she holds blue, which reveals that she is Force Sensitive.

Director and writer LeAndre Thomas, Director Justin Ridge, and those involved with the episode “The Pit” in D’Art Shtajio and Lucasfilm did an excellent job creating a Star Wars story of Imperial slaves finding hope to escape their slavery in the actions of Crux, an Imperial slave. Director Thomas explained that the inspiration for the short episode was Star Wars’ theme of “rebellions, empires, oppression, and hope” and “light vs. darkness.” He shared the story with other colleagues at Lucasfilm who loved and supported the making of the short episode leading to Lucasfilm’s collaboration with D’Art Shtajio to make it. Director Justin Ridge added how he and those involved with the project enjoyed making the story. They also designed the characters wearing the same slave uniform but with subtle alterations to give each character their personality.
A Massive Kyber Crystal
Kyber crystals are rare gems capable of focusing and amplifying energy. People mine the kyber crystals in worlds with a high natural concentration of Force energy. These worlds include Jedha and Ilum. The Jedi mine kyber crystals to create their lightsabers, while the Sith mine the kyber crystals to build powerful superweapons capable of destroying planets: the Death Star, Starkiller Base, and the Sith Eternal’s Xyston-Class Star Destroyers. Aside from the Jedi and the Sith, kyber crystals were used as power batteries to provide energy for people in locations such as massive futuristic cities.
The Jedi Order and the Sith Order do not only get kyber crystals but use the Force to change the crystals’ colors that match each Jedi or Sith’s personality. Both orders do this before making their lightsabers. However, the Sith only creates red lightsabers, while the Jedi’s lightsaber colors vary in different ways.
