In an exclusive report made by Deadline, CBS signed Rob Corddry (Childrens Hospital, Top Gear America) to their newest comedy pilot, JumpStart. He will be joining and leading opposite Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Craig of the Street) and Ryan Michelle Bathé (This Is Us, Boston Legal) on the project.
With many comedies on the rise for this spring season, many studios are jumping at the opportunity to put out fresh content. JumpStart is just one of the newest adaptations. CBS had ordered this newest multi-camera comedy pilot based on Robb Armstrong’s long-running comic strip of the same name. The main players who will produce this include Aaron Kaplan’s (A Million Little Things, HouseBroken) Kapital Entertainment, Wendi Trilling’s (The Neighborhood, Triggered) TrillTV, and CBS Studios.
According to Deadline, the pilot will be written by Wayne Conley (The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Queen Sugar) and will be directed by Phill Lewis (American Dad!, The Sweet Life of Zack & Cody). Conley will serve as an executive producer with Crews, Kaplan and Melanie Frankel (Book Club, They’re With Me) of Kapital Entertainment, Trilling for TrillTV, Andrews McMeel Entertainment’s Bridget McMeel (Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place, Garfield) and Troy Zien (Man with a Plan, Jeff Dunham, Beside Himself). Armstrong serves as co-executive producer for the pilot and any other foreseeable future productions. Lewis will only be an executive producer for this pilot.
This pilot adaptation to JumpStart is set in Philadelphia and follows Joseph L. Cobb played by Crews, a cop, his wife Marcy played by Bathé, a nurse, and Joe’s partner Crunchy played by Corddry. via. Deadline. It was reported that along with the original cast, CBS also brought on Glynn Turman (Supper 8, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as a guest star in a recurring role. They go on to say that Crunchy is Joe’s fellow officer buddy and best friend. They’re around so often together that the Cobb children call him “Uncle Crunchy”. It’s further described that Crunchy was “woke” long before it was a thing. He balances his demeanor given the situation either to be serious or to be funny.
From that same article, Turman plays Joe’s “Pop” Frank. He is a retired officer and holds “street cred”, a so-called legacy compared to Joe. He’s admired so much that former detainees who got arrested by him give him respect. It’s said that Frank knows he had put a lot of high expectations on Joe. He knows that one day Joe would pass him in status and service, but not yet.
According to Deadline, Corddry is best known for his creation on Adult Swim, Childrens Hospital. That resulted in a spinoff series called Medical Police. He was also one of the co-hosts of Top Gear America and starred in movies such as 80 For Brady and The Donor Party. He will host the podcast Amy Always Wins, which is set for release this spring. Corddry is currently represented by WME and Sechel.
As of now, there are no more recent announcements that detail how long the pilot would be, when it would be released, and who else would take part in it. More would be reported when CBS releases more information.
