According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix announced on Monday that an untitled animated series in the Stranger Things universe has been ordered. Stranger Things creators, Matt and Ross Duffer (Wayward Pines, We All Fall Down), say the show will be “in the vein of Saturday morning cartoons” like G.I. Joe, Masters of the Universe, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is not known if the Stranger Things cast will be involved.
Eric Robles’ (Fanboy & Chum Chum, Glitch Techs) animation house, Flying Bark, will be producing the series. The Duffer brothers will executive produce along with their Stranger Things collaborators Shawn Levy (Arrival, The Adam Project) and Dan Cohen (Free Guy, The Darkest Minds) of 21 Laps. The animated series will come from the Duffers’ Upside Down Pictures banner.
“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling,” said Matt and Ross Duffer in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with — the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues …”
The Duffers have also announced a Stranger Things stage show, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is opening in London this year and an untitled Stranger Things live-action spinoff.
Stranger Things was first released on Netflix on July 15, 2016 and is the streaming platform’s most popular English-language series of all time.
