According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Global has just announced that Waco: The Aftermath, the sequel series to their hit 2018 true crime miniseries, Waco, is now set to premiere on Showtime. Originally, the follow-up show was to be featured as a Paramount+ original series shortly after the original program was launched in 2018.
Waco is a dramatized recreation of the tragic 1993 fifty-one day standoff in Waco, Texas between the FBI, ATF, and the Branch Davidians, a doomsday cult spearheaded by notorious cult leader David Koresh. The series included the acting talents of stars such as Michael Shannon (George & Tammy, Bullet Train), Taylor Kitsch (The Terminal List, 21 Bridges), Rory Culkin (Under the Banner of Heaven, Scream 4), John Leguizamo (The Menu, Violent Night), and Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna).
As written by The Hollywood Reporter, Waco: The Aftermath will premiere on Showtime’s streaming and on-demand channels on April 14, 2023 before its debut on the Showtime channel on April 16. These dates also happen to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of the legal fallout of the the Waco tragedy.
The upcoming sequel series will purportedly tell the story of the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidian cult, as well as the rise of Timothy McVeigh, more infamously known as the domestic terrorist responsible for the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. McVeigh’s attacks were motivated by the Waco siege, as well as the controversial Ruby Ridge shootout. In the words of Showtime, the five-episode minidrama “provides a broader context for the escalation of the American militia movement, which foreshadows the infamous attacks of the Oklahoma City bombing and the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.”
Both Shannon and Leguizamo will reprise their roles as Gary Noesner and Jacob Vazquez, respectively, in Waco: The Aftermath. The show comes from showrunners and brothers John Erick Dowdle (As Above, So Below, No Escape) and Drew Dowdle (The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Devil), who created the initial Waco series. The Dowdle Brothers will also serve as executive producers alongside Shannon, Kitsch, Andrew Gettens (Hit & Run, American Gothic), and Lauren Mackenzie (We the Kings, Free Bird).
