Deadline reported that the network decided not to renew the show for a fourth season.
In a statement to Deadline, USA Network said that “[they] are proud of this show and its writers, which had a unique ability to address topical subjects before they unfolded in real life on the sports pages.” Still, they decided it was best to end it after the third season.
Necessary Roughness is about a sports psychologist (portrayed by Golden Globe nominee Callie Thorne) who works for the New York Hawks and struggles to keep her personal life intact while trying not to lose her practice at the same time.
Although it was never a big hit, Necessary Roughness managed to average a steady audience of 4 million viewers all throughout its three-season run and even cast John Stamos as a new male lead for the third season, which ended up being its last.
