The movie is a continuation from the original Luther series, which follows John Luther, a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can’t always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions. Luther ran in BBC for five seasons from 2010 to 2019.
The series stars Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Beasts of No Nation) as Luther, as well as Dermot Crowley (The Death of Stalin, The Foreigner), Michael Smiley (Kill List, Free Fire), Warren Brown (The Responder, Strike Back), Ruth Wilson (Saving Mr. Banks, Locke), and Paul McGann (The Three Musketeers, Withnail & I).
The fifth and final season of Luther ends with Luther broken and arrested after skirting the law to solve crimes, with the question asked “what does the future look like for Luther?”, via Entertainment Weekly. Luther: The Fallen Sun will continue with Luther in prison as he decides to break out, haunted by his failure to capture a gruesome serial killer terrorizing London, according to Deadline.
All five seasons of Luther are available to stream on Hulu. Luther: The Fallen Sun will be available to stream in March 2023 on Netflix.
