According to TVLine, ABC has canceled Avalon, a mystery drama starring Neve Campbell (Scream, Wild Things). This comes after the show was originally reported as a series order back in February.
Production for the pilot of the show began earlier this month and was expected to premiere at midseason. Campbell was cast in August of this year as the protagonist. Aside from Campbell, the cast of Avalon also included Roslyn Ruff (Rachel Getting Married, Salt), Steven Pasquale (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, Rescue Me), Alexa Mansour (Unfriend: Dark Web, Civil War), and Demetrius Grosse (Rampage, 13 Hours).
Avalon was loosely based on a short story by Michael Connelly (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Black Echo), a writer whose other novels have been adapted into well-known shows on both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The upcoming series was meant to take place in Avalon, a city on Catalina Island, with Campbell as Detective Nicole “Nic” Searcy from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. The island, populated by millions of tourists year-round, is a hot zone for crime; “a gig no career-driven L.A. cop wants,” says TVLine via the tagline for the show. Detective Searcy finds herself in charge of a high-profile mystery case that will define the future of her career. As the detective confronts various challenges in her effort to discover the truth, she will encounter many experiences that leave her questioning who she is and what she thought she knew about the island.
The creator of Avalon was intended to be David E. Kelley (The Practice, L.A. Law) who is also the writer and executive producer of The Lincoln Lawyer, one of Connelly’s novels that have inspired a Netflix show. Connelly was also set to be an executive producer of the show.
