Shonda Rhimes’ (Grey’s Anatomy) Inventing Anna will premiere on Netflix in February, and will serve as Rhimes’ first show she’s written for the network as well as the first show she’s created since 2012’s Scandal, according to Variety. Rhimes and her company Shondaland executive produced the immensely successful Bridgerton, which debuted on Netflix last year and will release a second season in 2022.
Inventing Anna is based on a New York Magazine story written by Jessica Pressler (The Hustlers at Scores) titled “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” and follows the “scammy enterprises of a charming young Russian woman, who had grifted New Yorkers,” via Variety. The nine-episode limited series began production in New York City fall 2019, but was halted due to the pandemic-related shutdown. The exact date of the premiere is currently unknown.
The series stars Anna Chlumsky (Veep) as Vivian, a reporter based on Pressler, alongside Julia Garner (Ozark), who plays Anna. Inventing Anna is shown through Vivian’s perspective as she speaks to those who Anna has swindled in the past. Katie Lowes (Scandal), Anna Daevere Smith (Nurse Jackie), Jeff Perry (Scandal), Kate Burton (Martyrs), Arian Moayed (Succession), Alexis Floyd (The Bold Type), Anders Holm (Workaholics), and Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) are also featured in the series.
Rhimes has also released a film entitled Hot Chocolate Nutcracker on Netflix, alongside an upcoming series titled Notes on Love, and, of course, Bridgerton.
