After only four days of debuting at the No.1 spot on the Starz app, the drama series Black Mafia Family (aka BMF) is set to come back for another season, via Deadline. Although BMF released only one episode, it has become one of the most anticipated series across the platform with high audience engagement.
The show features a real life story of the infamous Flenory brothers from southwest Detroit. In the 1980s, they emerged as the rising crime families with a growing cocaine business. As their empire kept growing, their influence was expanding which led to more dangers and risks.
Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr., the son of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, plays his father in the show. A freshman actor without much former experience, Flenory Jr. claimed that playing his own father is challenging: “Any son would love to play their father, but it’s all about if you can do it or not– not about what you want to do.” Da’Vinchi, known for his performance in Grown-ish (2018), plays Terry Flenory. Other cast members include Russell Hornsby (Grimm), Michole Briana White (Malignant), Ajiona Alexus (Breaking In), Eric Kofi Abrefa Myles Truitt (National Theatre Live: Julie), and Steve Harris (The Practice). Rappers Snoop Dogg and Eminem also appeared as recurring roles in the show.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Power, Power Book II: Ghost, For Life) serves as the executive producer for the series. According to Jeffrey Hirsch, the president and CEO of Starz, Jackson “continues to find and cultivate stories like BMF that are culturally relevant, bringing the network important untold stories that are incredibly diverse both in front of and behind the camera.”
Detroit native Randy Huggins (Star, Rebel, Power) serves as the writer and executive producer. Huggins states that “Detroit hasn’t been accurately portrayed in TV or film. So to have that opportunity, I really wanted to make sure I got that part right because I knew I wouldn’t be able to come home anymore if I didn’t.” In addition to Jackson and Huggins, Tasha Smith (Empire) also executively produces and directs BMF.
The second episode of BMF is set to premiere on Oct. 3, 2021. It is currently available on all Starz platforms.
