There is nothing more sacred than the relationship between best friends, the first full length trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series Firefly Lane argues. Starring Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses) and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), the series premieres on February 3, via Entertainment Weekly.
The upcoming series is based on the novel Firefly Lane written by author Kristin Hannah (The Nightingale). Spanning over 500 pages, the novel is an ode to friendship as it covers the decades long relationship between best friends Tully and Kate. Beginning when the two meet at 14-years-old, they find solace in each other and their friendship is chronicled through jumping timelines as teens and adults juggling work, family, and love. Hannah is also an executive producer on the show.
The trailer released on Thursday focuses on the adult Tully, portrayed by Heigl, and the adult Kate, portrayed by Chalke. It chronicles their ups and downs in their work ambitions or lake thereof as a simmering tension rises between the two. There are also flashbacks of their chaotic coming of age interwoven into the trailer, revealing how they met on Firefly Lane. Ali Skovbye (The Man in the High Castle) portrays the young Tully, and Roan Curtis (The Magicians) plays the young Kate.
The cast is rounded out by Yael Yurman (Once Upon a Time) as Marah, Beau Garrett (Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce) as Cloud, and Ben Lawson (Designated Survivor) as Ryan.
This marks a notable return to television for Hiegl and Chalke, as they were both stars of major network series portraying doctors. For six seasons Hiegl starred as intern turned resident Izzy Stevens on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy from 2005 to 2010. For her role she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama in 2007. Hiegl then starred and executive produced the ABC drama State of Affairs in 2014 but it was cancelled after one season. She also appeared in the legal drama Suits for one season from 2018 to 2019.
Chalke was a series regular for nine seasons on the NBC comedy Scrubs from 2001 to 2010. Portraying Dr. Elliot Reid, Scrubs was a major success going on to win several Emmy Awards. She’s also appeared in other various television series, including a recurring role in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother and is currently voicing the character of Beth in Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty.
Maggie Friedman (Witches of East End) serves as the series creator and showrunner.
