The rollercoaster that is the Gallagher family is having one last round before calling it quits. The recently released trailer for the final season of Showtime’s Shameless reflects the madness of these modern times, set in current day amidst COVID-19 via Entertainment Weekly.
After ten seasons of chaos, crime, and corruption, Shameless’s upcoming eleventh season will be its last. Set in reality with the Gallaghers sporting masks in the trailer, COVID-19 cannot deter them from their usual wrong doings and diabolical plans.
John Wells (Animal Kingdom), showrunner of Shameless, told Entertainment Weekly what to expect in the last installment of the Gallagher saga: “There’s never an end to the things we can satirize in the American projects, so I think [fans] should expect more of the same…Certainly keeping Ian and Mickey together and trying to see what it’s like for them to be newlyweds, seeing Carl move on with his life, and how Tami and Lip are going to adjust to really being together… and how do we form our own families without undermining our relationships with our original family? That’s a real challenge, to bring other people [into] your life that you realize have to be more important in the decision making than the family members you’ve always considered to be the most important thing. How does everyone adjust to that?”
The trailer released on Tuesday depicts the Gallaghers up to the same old shenanigans, with them picking fights with neighbors, hanging out at The Alibi, and of course, attempting to break into the legal marijuana business with questionable tactics. Ian and Mickey adjust to being newlyweds while Veronica and Kevin are still going strong after years of marriage. It includes the modern day COVID-19 handshake of bumping elbows, with family members such as Frank deciding not to wear masks while others do. The final season is very much centered around family and new beginnings as the Southside Chicagoans say goodbye to a decade long story of pandemonium.
Shameless first aired on Showtime in 2011. It was adapted from the original British series under the same name. The eleventh season will consist of twelve episodes and will premiere on Sunday, December 6 at 8 P.M. E.T.
