The notable card game Magic: The Gathering has announced a limited edition crossover card set with the AMC show The Walking Dead, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In order to coincide with the release of the spinoff series The Walking Dead: World Beyond and the season ten finale of its parent show, the set will be launched on October 4. The aim of the limited edition premium cards is to illustrate some iconic characters of the series and push for a more unique gaming experience.
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, Vice President of Games and Entertainment at AMC Networks Clayton Neuman stated that “Each of the cards have mechanics that are inspired by either the characters or the elements of The Walking Dead universe that they represent.” Because the show has always focused on the post-apocalyptic world rather than the individual characters, these cards will make apparent the features and attributes of the character they depict. Neuman told The Hollywood Reporter that “With each of the cards in the box, we really took the time to think about what is unique about the characters and how that can translate to a mechanic, when playing Magic, that makes sense, that would be a challenge for players.”
Mark Heggen, the role-playing game ‘Wizards of the Coast’ product architect also stated “This is the first time that we’re going all the way and designing new cards from the ground up to express outside characters and narrative worlds into the form of Magic cards,” via The Hollywood Reporter. The team showcased a preview card of Michonne Hawthorne who is played by Dana Gurira (Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame) in the series. They chose to depict her as a “lone, unstoppable samurai,” via The Hollywood Reporter, while also being equipped with a weapon which she utilizes for her survival.
This limited edition crossover set comes just after news of The Walking Dead‘s cancellation was announced. The series will conclude after its eleventh season is released.
