Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Kirsten Dunst is setting off in one of her craziest roles yet for Showtime’s newest dark comedy, On Becoming a God in Central Florida. Showtime has released an official poster and trailer for the upcoming series.
You can watch the trailer below.
Taking place in a small adjacent Orlando town in 1992, the series follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst) who earns minimum wage at the water park, her regular job, but has a dream she is determined to pursue and succeed in – to be rich. This is where the multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme, Founders American Merchandise (FAM), comes into play. The brainwashing scheme that once ruined Stubbs and her family’s life is now the very company she wants to get involved in.
FAM is led by a powerful leader, Obie Garbeau II (Ted Levine). In order to leave behind her “poor” lifestyle, Stubbs has to create a network of trust within the company and its employees. She dives deep into the business by developing a relationship with FAM’s biggest fan and loyal supporter, Cody (Théodore Pellerin). All the lying, scheming, and conning eventually affects her closest relationships with Ernie (Mel Rodriguez), her boss at the water park, and his wife, Bets (Beth Ditto), who has her doubts about FAM.
The 10-episode series is created and executive produced by Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky. Joining in on the team of executive producers is Smokehouse Pictures’ George Clooney (Catch-22) and Grant Heslov (Catch-22), Dunst, Esta Spalding (Masters of Sex), Sarah Shepard, and Charlie McDowell (The One I Love). McDowell directed the pilot. The show is also produced by Sony’s TriStar Television.
Golden Globe and Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgård (Big Little Lies) joins the cast with Academy Award winner Mary Steenburgen (The Last Man on Earth). Other cast members include Usman Ally (Veep), Julie Benz (Dexter), Melissa De Sousa (Ladies of the Law), John Earl Jelks (True Detective), Sharon Lawrence (Shameless), Josh Fadem (Better Call Saul), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Empire).
On Becoming a God in Central Florida debuts on Sunday, August 25 at 10 PM ET/PT on Showtime.
