Netflix just unveiled the trailer and release date for the long-awaited season 5 of Black Mirror, the unsettling sci-fi series from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones. Black Mirror will make its highly anticipated return on Wednesday, June 5th on Netflix. The first look at season 5 features pop singer Miley Cyrus and Avengers: Endgame star Anthony Mackie.
Cyrus is shown sitting in front of a piano and performing on stage in front of an adoring audience. The trailer suggests that Cyrus is a celebrity who has undergone a massive transformation in order to acquire fame, a meta storyline that may evoke Hannah Montana nostalgia for some viewers. Mackie is represented as a family man who finds himself on a dating app and is confronted by his partner, played by Sleepy Hollow actress Nicole Beharie.
While past seasons have been comprised of six episodes, the fifth season will focus on three stand-alone stories. The premiere of Black Mirror’s eerie choose-your-own-adventure film, Bandersnatch, in late 2018 is responsible for the delayed release of season 5. Due to the complexity of Bandersnatch — an interactive film that has multiple outcomes and storylines — the special installment required two years of careful development.
The trailer for season 5 reveals that episodes will address the impact of technology on romantic relationships, fame, mental health, and social media. Some noteworthy items in the trailer include a futuristic (but sinister) doll that behaves like a Google Assistant, a glimpse of a VR video game with Mortal Kombat-style fighting, and a Tinder-like dating app.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the star-studded cast of season 5 will include Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport, and Ludi Lin.
