HBO has confirmed that season 2 of Big Little Lies will premiere Sunday June 9th at 9-10 PM ET/PT. In the second season of this drama, the seven episodes will continue to explore the dark underside of the perfect exteriors of the most influential women in Monterey Bay: the Monterey Five. According to HBO, “The second season of this subversive, darkly comedic drama will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”
It has been two years since the first season, and fans of the show have been speculating who will be returning for the second season. HBO has confirmed that all of the Monterey Five — Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) — as well as their husbands — Ed (Adam Scott), Nathan (James Tupper) and Gordon (Jeffrey Nordling) — will be making reappearances. Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise, played by Meryl Streep, will also make her way into this season.
Creator David E. Kelley will continue to write and executive produce this season. The original story was from a novella by the same name written by Liane Moriarty. Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will also continue to executive produce this season, along with Andrea Arnold, Jean-Marc Vallée, Bruna Papandrea, Per Saari, Gregg Fienberg, Nathan Ross and Liane Moriarty. This season will be directed Andrea Arnold, replacing Jean-Marc Vallée who directed the first season.
Concerning the adaptation from Moriarty’s novella, Carter Ploys, HBO’s president of programming, told Vulture that: “We went to Liane and asked, ‘Do you see any more life in these characters? You wrote the book — do you see them having life beyond what you wrote?’ She came up with a novella, which was key. David took it and thought, ‘Is there something I can do with it?’ Reese and Nicole were involved, and they felt that there was more life in the characters. Everybody approached it from a place of love and care [for] these characters and this property, and again, with a little dose of skepticism along the way.”
HBO has also released a teaser for the next season, which can be watched below.
