According to a report by TvLine, Emmy award winner Nathan Lane has been cast in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and will be joining recently announced co-star Natalie Dormer, who will be playing the demon Magda. While production on the show is expected to begin later this year.
Although taking place almost 4o years after the original series, most of the main characters will be connected through the deity, Santa Muerte while others will be influenced by the Devil. The new spin-off will also focus heavily on the clash between American and Mexican folklore.
Lane is set to play Lewis Michener, a veteran officer in the Los Angeles Police Department during the late 1930’s. Bringing wisdom and world-smart’s to the table, Lane’s Michner will help assist and mentor Detective Tiago Vega, who will be played by Fear the Walking Dead‘s Daniel Zovatto.
John Logan’s Penny Dreadful spin-off has officially been confirmed to be set in the City of Angels itself. During 1938 at “a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.” But after a grisly murder shocks the city, Vega and Michener become caught up in the intricacies involved in the case, and eventually find themselves on the wrong side of the city’s history.
Although known to children as the voice of Timon from the Lion King, Lane’s most recent TV credits include Modern Family, The Blacklist and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. He also took home a Tony Award in 2018 for his stage work for Broadway’s production of Angels in America.
