Facebook Watch’s most popular show, Sorry for Your Loss, is a well-articulated show that covers various important points in a conversation including grief, depression, happiness, addiction, and acceptance.
Elizabeth Olsen stars as Leigh Shaw who recently loses her husband Matt (Mamoudou Athie) in such a way where she does not think she can move forward with her life. With the help of her mom Amy (Janet McTeer) and sister Jules (Kelly Marie Tran), Leigh tries to find a way to feel alive again. Matt’s brother Danny (Jovan Adepo) shares his grief with Leigh as they both try to live their life everyday while competing with sudden darkness.
The show gets brutally honest about mental illness, a topic that a lot of people seem to avoid in our society. “I think people think of depression as this extreme state when really, it’s something you have to every day try and give it a little love and try to figure it out, and watching someone actually do the work is something I feel like we don’t see very often,” she explains. “Every time I’m dealing with a phase in my life where I’m going, ‘Oh, I’m so down right now,’ that’s a different experience from being clinically depressed. So, I loved how we told this story of depression, especially in episode 5.”
With fans ready for a second season, Olsen does not know where the show is headed on a platform like Facebook Watch. “This is kind of an experiment. It’s just fascinating to be a part of it,” she concedes. “Hopefully watching it is a cathartic experience for people, where they can feel like they can relate. I feel like the season finale ends at a place that is honest and real and not a trope of any kind.”
