Black Mirror season 4 has premiered with a bang, meeting celebration by fans and professional critics alike. One of the strongest episodes of the season is, in fact, the very first one: the Toby Haynes’ directed “USS Callister”. The first outer space-set narrative of the show, the episode has plenty of Star Wars and Star Trek references while bringing a fresh, razor sharp take to the sci-fi genre.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, fans of the episode might just have reason to celebrate: in an interview with the magazine, Toby Haynes said he would love to return to the world of “USS Callister” and expand the story into a spin-off. Haynes even mentioned that Black Mirror’s creator and showrunner Charlie Brooker himself is considering doing more with the storyline.
“I’m keen to see it as a TV series. I think Charlie might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know. …I’d love to work with that crew and cast again,” Haynes said. “There’s so much you could do. Fingers crossed, you never know.”
One of the strongest components of the episode is the lead character, Nanette Cole, who is portrayed by Cristin Milioti (best known for her work on How I Met Your Mother and Fargo). The Hollywood Reporter also asked Milioti if she would return for a spin-off, and the actress answered with an emphatic yes.
“We would talk about that a lot at the end of filming. I would die if they turned this into a spinoff series… It’s such an incredible concept. Maybe that’s wishful thinking on my part, but I would love to see that,” Milioti said in the interview.
There’s been no comment from Charlie Brooker or Netflix on the possibility of moving forward with more of “USS. Callister”, but judging from the response of its cast, crew, and fans, the project would be met with plenty of excitement.
