As reported by The Mary Sue, CW has released a trailer for its upcoming DC Comic series Black Lightning. The series, a standalone apart from the Arrow universe, revolves around high school Principal Jefferson Pierce who comes out of superhero retirement to help his neighbors.
Black Lightning was the first black superhero in the DC realm to have his own series. Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil originally began work on the show for Fox; however, the CW elected to run with it.
Rather than the typical vigilante storyline, it is believed the Akils are focusing on a more community involved approach. A brief summary of the show reads, “With crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns – to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.”
Show headliner Cress Williams has been part of several series in the last couple years including Code Black and Heart of Dixie. Williams shares the small screen with William Catlett and Nafessa Williams (One Life to Live).
Black Lightning debuts January 16, 2018 on the CW.
