It looks like Kimmy Schmidt plans on staying unbreakable. TVGuide.com reported yesterday that the Netflix original series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been renewed for a fourth season.
The series follows a former mole woman named Kimmy, played by The Office‘s Ellie Kemper. After being held captive for 15 years by cult leader Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, played in a recurring role by Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm, Kimmy moves to New York City to start fresh. As she tries to reinvent herself and move on from the past, she befriends her quirky landlady Lillian Kaushtupper, played by American Dreamer‘s Carol Kane, and a struggling actor that doubles as her roommate, Titus Andromedon, who is played by Broadway actor Tituss Burgess. In Season 1 Kimmy starts working as a nanny for the family of Manhattan socialite Jacqueline Voorhees, played by 30 Rock‘s Jane Krakowksi. By Season 3, Kimmy no longer works for Jacqueline, but has remained part of the socialite’s life.
All 13 episodes of Season 3 dropped on Netflix on May 19. The season ended with Kimmy unintentionally being hired at a start-up company all while dealing with her marriage to the Reverend, Jacqueline deciding that she will begin a career as a talent agent, Tituss trying and failing to win back his former flame Mikey (Custody‘s Mike Carlsen), and Lillian participating in a new romance. Season 3 included notable guest appearances from Daveed Diggs, Laura Dern, David Cross, Anna Camp, Amy Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Judah Friedlander.
According to Deadline, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was originally set to air on NBC, though was moved to premiere on Netflix. The show was picked up for a second season before the first one even aired. The series was renewed for a third season in January 2016, which was almost four months before the premiere of Season 2.
The sitcom was created by 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live‘s Tina Fey and former 30 Rock showrunner Robert Carlock. The two creators also serve as executive producers along with former 30 Rock producers Jeff Richmond and David Miner. The series has received 11 Emmy nominations, which included two nominations in the Outstanding Comedy Series category for Season 1 and Season 2. Similar to Seasons 1 and 2, Season 3 was well received by critics. There is no word on potential story lines for Season 4 yet, though they are bound to be hilarious.
All of the episodes that comprise the first three seasons of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are currently available to be watched on Netflix.
