Slashfilm recently reported on the release of TNT’s upcoming new miniseries The Alienist, a 10-episode drama executively-produced by Cary Fukunaga.

The miniseries is set in 1896 New York City and follows a criminal psychologist, newspaper illustrator, and police secretary as they help hunt down a serial killer targeting prostitutes in the city. The Alienist is based on the Caleb Carr novel of the same name.

Cary Fukunaga, best known for his captivating work as series director on True Detective Season 1, was also set to direct the series as well, but dropped out of this role and merely stayed on as executive producer. Fukunaga left to pursue other projects after reportedly disagreeing with the network over the show’s budget. Though Fukunaga is not directing, the trailer still appears to carry a sense of his unique visual flair through its cinematography. The Alienist also has thematic links to True Detective Season 1, which followed a pair of police officers as they hunted down a serial killer in southern gothic Louisiana.

Jakob Verburggen (responsible for directing episodes for series such as Black Mirror and House of Cards) took on the role as series director after Fukunaga’s drop-out while screenwriter Hossein Amini (Drive, Two Faces in January) is responsible for writing the miniseries. Starring in The Alienist is Daniel Brühl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds) as psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, Luke Evans (The Girl on the Train, Beauty & the Beast) as newspaper illustrator John Moore, and Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, American Pastoral) as police office secretary Sara Howard.

The Alienist will be comprised of 10 episodes. The miniseries is slated to premiere some time later this year on TNT.
