This 90 second teaser features Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, and Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister as they walk dramatically to their respective thrones. Though the trailer may not be quite as suspenseful as watching a block of ice melt for over an hour to reveal the Season 7 premiere date, it does show us some unseen footage, which is always exciting. Even if it is just a series of vaguely unfamiliar shadowy hallways, we’ll take what we can get. We also get a glimpse of a new throne. Cersei is clearly claiming the Iron Throne in King’s Landing, and Jon stares in either longing or loathing (there’s a fine line) at the seat of the King in the North at Winterfell. Dany’s throne is new: a jagged stone chair that is possibly located at Dany’s ancestral home of Dragonstone. These characters are currently the three major contenders for the Iron Throne and rule of Westeros, but knowing Martin’s style, there is absolutely no guarantee that they won’t all be killed off in the first episode to allow for some new contenders to rise up.
However, the end of the trailer reminds us all that this is a moot point, because unless someone does something drastic in the North, the White Walkers from beyond the Wall will end life as it is known and do something particularly unpleasant like cover the world in ice for all of eternity.
The musical track to this trailer (because we know you were wondering) is a remixed version of the aptly named 90s hit song “Sit Down” by artist James, the lyrics of which suggest some of the madness that is likely to come with all the power of these uncomfortable-looking seats.
