Deadline announced that Maniac, the much-discussed new series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, is chugging along towards production.

This new series was penned by Patrick Somerville and based on the previous Norwegian programming. Maniac delves into Stone and Hill’s personal fantasy worlds while they are stuck in the mental institution in the real world. The show is expected to be a dark comedy, which perfectly aligns both actors’ previous comedic chops with such heavy script material.

Cary Fukunaga has signed on to direct the ten episode season. Previously Fukunaga worked on HBO’s acclaimed drama True Detective, where he directed the entire first season with enough care to take home an Emmy for it in 2014. Fukunaga also executive produces Maniac with Stone, Hill, Michael Sugar and Doug Wald of Anonymous Content, Espen PA Lervaag & Kjetil Indegard, and Kruke Kristiansen & Anne Kolbjornsen. Ashley Zelta has agreed to co-executive produce the series.

Maniac has been given a straight-to-series order and was sold to Netflix in March of 2016. Production is set to start on August 15 in New York City, and principal photography is planned to be wrapped up before Thanksgiving.
