Syfy’s upcoming project Krypton just found its leading man.
Irish actor Cameron Cuffe has been cast as the lead in Krypton, the Superman prequel pilot at Syfy. Cuffe will play Seg-El, ancestor of Kal-El (a.k.a. Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman). TV Guide reports that Krypton will tell the story of Seg-El before the events of Superman and before the planet of Krypton blows to bits and falls to earth as radio-active green mineral.
Cuffe’s acting credits are mostly theatrical, but he appeared in Florence Foster Jenkins and The Halcyon on ITV.
As previously reported, David Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) is behind the pilot. The pilot will open with Seg-El,who has been stripped of his rank, living as one of Krypton’s lowest caste members. We know from Superman lore that Jor-El, the father of Kal-El and son of Seg-El was a well respected scientist, and on Krypton scientists are at the top of the societal ladder. That must mean that we can expect Seg-El to strive to repair his family’s name.
Superman’s lineage has not been widely explored beyond his parents, but Goyer’s plan with the new series is to give the house of El and Krypton new history.
David Goyer and Damian Kindler will serve as executive producers. Colm McCarthy will direct the pilot which was co-written by Goyer and Ian B. Goldberg.
Cuffe’s casting announcement comes a month after Syfy revealed actress Georgina Campbell (Flowers) will play Lyta Zod, Seg-El’s secret and forbidden love-interest.
