The fifth season of Switched at Birth was renewed back in October just a week before the fourth season ended.
Switched at Birth revolves around two girls who discover that they were (you guessed it) switched at birth. Both characters Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) grew up in different worlds. One attended public school and grew up in a low-income area while the other attended private school all her life and comes from a privileged neighborhood. Both Daphne and Bay’s families decide to merge as one family and together they do their best to navigate through the various obstacles that comes their way.
The show also helps to spread awareness on deaf culture and actively incorporates sign-language into many of the episodes. There are several deaf characters on the show including Daphne who is one of the lead characters on Switched at Birth
During the season finale of Switched at Birth’s 4th season, we saw Regina’s (Constance Marie) boyfriend Eric (Terrell Tilford) “kidnap” his son before his drug addict ex-wife regains custody. Also, Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and his girlfriend Lily (Rachel Shenton) prepare for the birth of their baby after having doubts earlier in the season as to whether or not to follow through with the pregnancy due to the baby having Down syndrome. At the end of the episode, there’s a flash-forward to Daphne and Bay living it up in China until they receive an emergency call from back home which prompts them both to rush back to the U.S. ASAP. However, viewers are left in the dark as to what exactly urgent news entails.
Despite the current filming for Switched at Birth, there isn’t an official premiere date set for the series’ fifth season.
