More than a year after Netflix first announced the series, the streaming platform has revealed first-look photos and the release date for its upcoming teen dark comedy, The Body. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Body will premiere on Netflix November 11, giving audiences their first glimpse at the new series.
The coming-of-age series will follow a group of Catholic schoolgirls who unleash a chain of supernatural disorder after a dance-team initiation takes an unexpected turn. Emmy-nominated writer-director Quinn Shephard (Blame, Under the Bridge) will serve as showrunner for the eight-part series and direct its pilot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shephard described the show’s tone as a “raunchy teen psychodrama” with gritty religious-horror elements. Her inspiration for the show included other top teen psycho-dramas such as Jennifer’s Body and Carrie, as well as classic material such as The Crucible.
In a post on Tudum, Shephard expressed that although the premise of the show centers on girlhood, she did not want its message to apply only to high schoolers. Shephard argued, “we don’t ever stop coming of age,” and the show’s themes of identity, self-acceptance, and self-love would resonate with diverse audiences.
The cast list was also released and includes Kristina Bogic (Playing Gracie Darling, Howl) as Anya Butler; Sara Boustany (Hello Beautiful, Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings) as Elise Zakaria; Geena Meszaros (The Order, In Cold Light) as Lisbeth Anderson; Nnamdi Asomugha (The Knife, The Good Nurse) as Father Franklin; Louisa Krause (You Can’t Win, Superman) as Catherine Anderson; Shirley Chen (Slanted, Beast Beast) as Maddie Delaney; Jackson Kelly (The Pitt, Imperfect Omen) as Leo Anderson; and Sofia Wylie (Andie Mack, The Map That Leads to You) as Grace Franklin, among others.
Executive producers include Peter Chernin (Family Guy, Apex), Amy Israel (Satura, Bad Boy) and Josh Stern (The Good Nurse, Dickson) for North Road. Additionally, Riley Keough (Butterfly Jam, Under the Bridge), Gina Gammell (Butterfly Jam, Under the Bridge) and Sacha Ben Harroche (War Pony, Robe of Gems) will executive produce for Felix Culpa.
