Peacock has unveiled their initial teaser for Crystal Lake, the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel miniseries set to release this autumn. Linked below, the trailer features audiences’ first look at Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me, Freaks and Geeks) as Pamela Voorhees, the bereaved mother of horror icon Jason Voorhees and — spoilers — the franchise’s first psychotic killer.
Per the official series synopsis (via TVLine), Crystal Lake “follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events are set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?”
While Friday the 13th takes place in 1978, Pamela’s killing spree begins all the way back in 1958, when delusions of her departed son begin directing her to take revenge on the counselors responsible for his death. As a counselor in the teaser identifies Jason as “the kid (that) drowned last summer,” it seems likely that Crystal Lake will largely take place during this time period. However, the synopsis’ mention of “two strangers” digging into Pam’s past also implies that the events of the original Friday will feature in some capacity, possibly now through the eyes of its central antagonist.
Although her role as the franchise’s signature slasher would eventually be eclipsed by that of her undead son and his iconic machete-and-hockey-mask getup, Pamela has continued to appear in many of Friday the 13th’s eleven sequels, often through flashbacks or hallucinations. Cardellini joins a long list of actresses who have portrayed the character throughout the series’ half-century span, including Betsy Palmer and Nana Visitor. “Mommy’s here,” Cardellini assures audiences in the teaser’s stinger, as a shot of a blood-soaked Pamela abruptly cuts to black.
Crystal Lake will premiere Thursday, October 15th on Peacock in the United States and on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom. Brad Caleb Kane, who most recently helped write IT: Welcome To Derry for HBO Max, will act as showrunner, while independent film distributor A24 will serve as producer (via Entertainment Weekly).
