Deadline has reported that a series titled Toxic Moms starring Ashley Tisdale (Aliens In The Attic, Scary Movie 5) is in the works at Netflix. Several parties were reportedly interested in the series before it landed at Netflix. Tisdale will combine her talents with Ali Wong (Always Be My Maybe, Beef) and Sabrina Jalees (Search Party, I Used To Be Funny).
The series follows an overworked mother who is drawn into a group of chic and wealthy women. When the facade breaks, a mother must decide how much she is willing to overlook for a sense of community. All three women will executive produce the series with Jalees serving as writer. Rumors have swirled that Wong may take on directing duties for an undisclosed number of episodes.
In an Instagram post featuring the Deadline article, Tisdale joked, “I guess I can be a little toxic,” according to Deadline. Toxic Moms is based on Tisdale’s own experience as a mother of two. Tisdale’s article she wrote for The Cut, ‘Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group: I Though I Found My Village. Instead, I Was Back In High School’ appears to share some similarities with the series and went viral when it was published earlier this year.
Each episode will be half an hour. Netflix has had recent success in female-led comedies. Toxic Moms will look to join the ranks of Running Point, Nobody Wants This, Survival of the Thickest, and North of North.
Tisdale rose to stardom as a child star on Disney Channel. She played Maddie on The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody and Sharpay in the original movie High School Musical. In adulthood, she would have roles in several series, including CW’s Hellcats, Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, and CBS’s Carol’s Second Act. She executive-produced and starred in the ABC Family (now Freeform) series Young & Hungry. As a voice actor, she starred as the titular character’s older sister, Candace in Phineas & Ferb. Additionally, she has another series in development at CBS entitled You’re Only Young Twice.
