FX’s The Bear has officially come to an end, and its final episode included a quiet tribute to the late Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…), who appeared in the show’s fourth season. According to Deadline, the series finale, titled “The Original Beef of Chicagoland,” features a touching callback during one of its closing scenes.
As Ebra, played by Edwin Lee Gibson (The Bear, Shameless), works with Carmy, played by Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, The Iron Claw), to expand the restaurant through franchising, he calls the restaurant consultant Albert Schnurr, portrayed by Reiner.
Although Albert is never heard on the other end of the line, the conversation ends with Ebra saying, “As you wish.” Deadline reports the line is a direct reference to Westley’s famous phrase from Reiner’s 1987 classic The Princess Bride, in which Cary Elwes (Saw, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) delivered the now-iconic quote.
mxdwn previously covered Seth Meyers‘ tribute to Reiner on Late Night. During the broadcast, Meyers shared personal stories about the filmmaker while also criticizing comments made by President Donald Trump following Reiner’s death.
The segment focused on Reiner’s impact on the entertainment industry and the admiration he inspired from colleagues throughout his career. Reiner joined The Bear during Season four in a three-episode arc as Albert Schnurr, helping guide the restaurant through its next stage of growth.
While his character does not physically appear in the finale, the brief reference serves as a subtle acknowledgment of his contribution to the series. Deadline notes that the tribute comes months after the deaths of Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested in connection with their deaths. According to the report, he later pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, and the case has since been pushed to the fall as investigators continue gathering evidence.
Rather than dedicating an entire scene to Reiner, The Bear opted for a simple moment that longtime film fans would immediately recognize. The iconic phrase, delivered by Ebra as he closes the call with Albert, quietly honors both the actor and one of his most celebrated films, giving the series a heartfelt farewell as it concludes its five-season run.
