Following the comical heist, Legend of Vox Machina delivers an emotionally charged episode that explores the sacrifices heroism requires. Like the age-old adage says, with great power comes great responsibility. And sometimes, greater loss.
We pick up with Grog transcribing what he recalled from the Cobalt Archive. Centuries ago, four champions made the ultimate sacrifice to banish a deranged sorcerer to another dimension. A dimension accessible through the black mysterious orb. Percy plots to disarm the orb while Pike and Grog return home for answers about one of the champions.
Taryon solves Percy and Vex’s orb dilemma, but loses Doty in the process. It’s a somber moment of growth for Taryon, as he continues on his arc from bumbling aloof to genuine hero. As emotions are high, Vex comes clean to Percy fearing his inevitable fate. And during a drunken warp session, Keyleth confesses to Vax how she feels like a failure, unable to save Vex from his pending doom.

Pike and Grog reunite with her great-great grandfather, Wilhand Trickfoot, aka Pop-pop. A year removed from the dragon attacks, Pike feels guilty she didn’t protect them. She’s even more discouraged when she can’t heal a young girl from dragon’s breath, a casualty of the attacks. But Pop-pop and his new beau, Louisa, reassure her that things are improving. They meet Shepherd Gideon, who is guiding rebuiliding efforts. But fear strikes Pike when the villagers collectively chant “we are his blood.”
Later, Pop-pop tells Pike and Grog that her ancestor, Ezre, was one of the champions. It’s a sentimental moment deepening the trio’s bond. But, it’s short-lived as Louisa and other followers attack Pike and Grog. When Pop-pop shows signs of dragon breath, a battle ensues to save his life.
Louisa preps Pop-pop for the sacrificial ritual to make him immortal. But the masked cult member appears, ending the ceremony. They kill Louisa and the others for insubordination, but spare Pike’s life. Pike and Grog witness Pop-pop succumb to his injuries, and vow to kill those responsible.
In the final moments, Gideon is revealed as the cult’s head leader and his devout acolyte is unmasked.
This episode pushes the narrative forward with its final reveal, while simultaneously highlighting a recurring theme. Gideon and his acolyte pose a serious threat to our heroes as they seem more connected than first believed. The losses in this episode emphasize how heroes’ loved ones become targets. Taryon loses Doty, Vex and Keyleth afraid of losing each other, and finally, Pike losing Wilhand. It’s a question every hero must face and weigh throughout their journey. A question of doubt that plagued Vox Machina, especially Pike, at the beginning of the series.
