In a press release, CBS and Paramount announced that they have officially begun filming the second season of the #1 new broadcast series, Marshals. Filming is taking place on location in Park City, Utah, with the return of Luke Grimes (50 Shades of Grey, The Magnificent Seven) reprising his role as Kayce Dutton.
The first season was a massive success, which saw an average of 20.4 million multiplatform viewers across the first 8 episodes. The show premiered this spring as a spinoff from the widely popular Yellowstone. Fans were surprised when the studio decided to kill off Dutton’s wife, Monica, who was played by Kelsey Asbille (Fargo, Wind River), off-screen between storylines. With the new season expected to play further into Dutton’s grief over the loss of his wife and also potential new love interests.
The main storyline of season two will feature Kayce Dutton joining an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, where he will get a chance to showcase his skills as a cowboy and how they synergize with his training as a Navy SEAL to bring long overdue range justice to outlaws of Montana. The show is slated to hit the small screen during the fall lineup, with other Yellowstone spin-offs like Dutton Ranch already premiering.
Although Rotten Tomatoes has given the show a less-than-favorable review with a 45% approval rating and an average score of six out of ten, the fans have stood by the series expansion and spoken with their viewership. Critics mention that the spin-off lacks “narrative spark and intrigue” that was so easy for the original to obtain. They even went as far as to call it a “ham-fisted trek.” Unbothered by the professional critics at Rotten Tomatoes, fans catapulted the show into the number one spot with well over 20 million viewers. It’s clear the Yellowstone craze isn’t dying down any time soon, which will leave plenty of work for Grimes as he just inked a long-term contract extension to stay attached to his character, Kayce Dutton.
Season two of Marshals is set to premiere this fall on CBS.
