![Review: ‘The Vampire Lestat’ Season 3, Episode 2 “Toledo” [SPOILERS]](https://television-b26f.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/The-Vampire-Lestat-3-770x470.jpg)
For those that may be miffed with the more humorous tone of the first episode, fret not. While the laughs and nonsensical narration remains throughout, episode 2 highlights how the series still boasts its dramatic chops. Not only do we learn more about Lestat and Gabriela’s early life, we see that Louis plays a major role in a side quest involving the Talamasca.
Venturing to the next tour stop, our episode opens with Lestat detailing his upbringing. As a child who stuttered and had a love for the stage, Lestat withstood cruel ridicule from his father and two older brothers. His only safe haven was his mother, Gabriela, who shared similar disdain for her husband. Throughout the years, Lestat outgrows his speech impediment, but not his father’s ire. Much later, with Gabriela ailing, Lestat “saves” her. Before leaving their world behind, they murder his father, siblings and their wives — sparing the children.

In the present, his band comes to grip with Lestat’s identity. Alex elects they leave and alert the authorities. But when Lestat reveals his bandmates thoughts, Alex is the lone usurper. Lestat threatens he’ll eventually return or suffer consequences.
Lestat and “Sophia,” as she is called now, catch up while on a murderous tour throughout the Ohio city. They produce a slaughter through the Great Conversion — a massive increase in vampiric people around the world. She attends one of his shows, where she lays eyes on Louis for the first time. He and Lestat reunite as Louis owns the Detroit hotel Lestat destroyed. As they seek some agreement around the damage, it is clear Lestat harbors animosity toward his past lover. And Louis sees Lestat’s actions as a cry for help. They fail to come at an impasse.
Later, Louis meets with Daniel, who apologizes for not asking permission before releasing his novel. Molloy apologizes, but it’s half-hearted, as he ambushes Louis with Agent James and Rashid from the Talamasca. James seeks to recruit Louis to take care of a coven in Detroit causing problems. Louis is not interested until he reveals the coven leader: Bruce. Claudia’s Bruce.
Episode 2 is another solid entry. Learning about Lestat’s childhood stirs empathy, however, seeing the true nature of his and Gabriela’s relationship opens another box of trauma unmatched from his father. Much like Louis was groomed and stalked, Lestat fell victim to his mother’s advances. His safe space, in reality, is not safe at all, blurring the lines. Even as her maker, she still possesses so much control over him. I don’t see their reunion producing good fruit for our protagonist.

Louis’ predicament helps tie us to the first two seasons, delivering a much more interesting Talamasca angle than the canceled series did.
