The untitled project hails from showrunner-writer-executive producers Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg via their Midnight Radio banner. The series is described as a modern origin story for the Mystery Inc. gang—and Great Dane Scooby-Doo—that revisits the case that first pulled them into the world of solving mysteries, per Deadline.
During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne become embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie Velma and the strange but ever so handsome new kid Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.
Warner Bros. Television is producing the series. In addition to Appelbaum and Rosenberg, executive producers include Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman for Berlanti Productions, which holds an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, as well as André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Adrienne Erickson for Midnight Radio, according to Deadline. Director Toby Haynes (Andor, Doctor Who) is on board to helm the first episode and also serves as an executive producer.
The Scooby-Doo franchise began with the 1969 animated series from CBS and Hanna-Barbera, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. Over more than five decades, it has spawned multiple animated series, nearly 40 animated films and several theatrical features, including the early 2000s live-action movies starring Freddie Prinze Jr. (She’s All That, I Know What You Did Last Summer), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cruel Intentions), Matthew Lillard (Scream, Good Girls), Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me, ER), Deadline notes. Netflix’s new series will be the first live-action take for television.
Hauser’s recent work includes a celebrated turn in Apple TV+’s Black Bird, which earned him both Emmy and Golden Globe recognition. His 2025 slate featured roles in Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere for Searchlight, Paramount’s The Naked Gun and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Next up, he stars opposite Mark Wahlberg (Ted, The Fighter) in Peter Farrelly’s comedy Balls Up for Prime Video and appears in Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot for Sony, among other projects, per Deadline.
